New Coalition Launches “Stand With Mason” Campaign to Support George Mason University and President Gregory Washington

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(FAIRFAX, VA – July 23, 2025) A new grassroots coalition of alumni, community advocates, and business leaders today announced the launch of www.StandWithMason.com, to rally support for George Mason University and its president, Dr. Gregory Washington, amid a politically motivated federal investigation.

The “Stand With Mason” campaign highlights the university’s excellence, transparency, and contributions to Virginia and the nation. The effort pushes back against political interference in university governance and emphasizes Dr. Washington’s strong record of leadership, including record-breaking enrollment, economic impact to the local economy, and research output during his tenure.

“Mason has become a powerhouse of innovation, inclusion, and impact, not just in Virginia but across the country,” said James W. “Jimmy” Hazel, JD ’84, a long-time supporter of George Mason who has at one time led each of the three university-wide boards – Rector of the Board of Visitors, Chair of the GMU Foundation, and President of the GMU Alumni Association. He also co-led the search committee that hired Dr. Washington.

“George Mason’s $3.5 billion annual impact on Northern Virginia’s economy cannot be overstated,” said Jim Dyke, former Northern Virginia Chamber Chair, former VA Secretary of Education, and parent of a Mason alum. “It’s not just a university, it’s a cornerstone of our region’s workforce, innovation, and future prosperity.”

Supporters are encouraged to sign a public letter of support, share personal stories, and access resources through the newly launched website.

The coalition is also calling on elected officials, business leaders, and the broader higher education community to reject political overreach and defend the independence of Virginia’s largest public university.
